The Martinos A Legacy of Art James McClelland Ted R Walke 9780892711314 Books

Being the granddaughter of Antonio P. Martino, one of the seven Martino brothers, I am grateful and awed by Jim McClellan's book. I have a 10-page plus document listing all the awards my grandfather won over the years, yet it wasn't until his later years that he was able to make a living off his painting. Not only did grandpop work at a commerical art studio with his brothers to support his al fresco fine art painting at night, but in their younger days his wife Mary would cook for all the brothers to help put food on the table, too. I have fond memories of visiting my grandparents in Philadelphia as a child and later as an adult when I moved out to California in my 20's. Prior to gathering around the table to eat a serving of Grandmom's spaghetti with meatballs as big as tennis balls, we would collect in Grandpop's studio to see his latest painting propped up on his easel with the smell of fresh paint and varnish filling the air. I would thumb through the stacks of oil paintings that lined the studio floor, too, picking out those that were my favorites. As my grandparents aged, and their stories charmed, I knew I had to somehow preserve them for posterity. I convinced a friend to video me interviewing both grandpop and grandmom in the 80's when they were in their 70's. This tape is now invaluable to the newest family members who never met them who can now watch grandpop passionately talking about his painting and grandmom passionately talking about her support of grandpop's painting! Thank you, Jim, for your interest and hard work gathering together the stories and paintings of my grandfather, his brothers, and their progeny! I highly recommend this beautiful book to anyone interested in fine art and a fine family of artists.

Jim McClelland did a wonderful job on this book of the Martino's.
It can be very difficult, dealing with so many family members,
to try and get the facts right on such a large number of artists
in one family and I feel he accomplished the task very well!
It is worth the read!

Terry Newman
This is a beautiful and valuable exploration of the work of a remarkable family of artists. More than a century ago, the seven Martino brothers began to make their names as accomplished painters in the Philadelphia area. They worked mostly in the tradition of the preceding generation of Pennsylvania Impressionists, though some combined landscapes of the lush Bucks County countryside with gritty urban scenes that they made beautiful, too. The brothers are the main focus of McClelland's lavishly illustrated book, but he also considers the work of one wife and two daughters who are successful artists today. They're all here, gorgeously illustrated. The book will delight those who are already fans of any of the Martinos. They'll also learn fascinating tidbits about their relationships. And for the uninitiated lover of fine painting, seeing the work of these artists will be a treat.
Many people have heard of Pennsylvania's Wyeth Family of painters. However, The Martino Family's contributions to the history of art deserve to be more fully explored, and this book is the first-ever book to set out for the reader in clear, easy-to-follow language the various members of the family and to show in beautiful illustrations, some wonderful paintings. Previously, one could see many of these paintings only in private collections, so this is a breakthrough and makes this book valuable for that alone. In addition, the book sets these painters in an historical context, and makes it easy for the reader to think about how painters may be part of a tradition and share certain values, yet express their individual interests--aesthetic and political. It would be great if a curator or an arts organization would use this book as a guide for mounting a traveling exhibit that nationally spreads the reputation these painters have. If you like Wyeth, Redfield, Baum, Folinsbee, Garber, and related painters from the first half of the twentieth century, you will want this book for your collection.
