Road of Skulls Gotrek Felix Josh Reynolds 9781849702911 Books

In Homeric style Felix and Gotrek carve their way through Chaos hordes, with Reynolds poetically describing the blood, gore and carnage. This being my first Gotrek and Felix book I came to the characters without any preconceived notions and found the journey quite enjoyable. Reynolds excels at vivid action and description and manages to draw humorous repartee from even the grimmest of situations.

The only spots where I found things a bit tedious was when the narrative shifted to the perspective of the Chaos hordes, establishing them as perversions of nature, bloodthirsty, vicious and with no redeeming qualities whatsoever (a little of this goes a long ways). During these shifts we meet Canto, a Chaos warrior, who becomes the most sympathetic of the Chaos warriors by virtue of the fact that he might be the only one that isn't totally insane. Nevertheless, the importance of these scenes from the Chaos perspective become clear toward the end of the book and they pay off in a big way.

A great read, but not recommended for those with an aversion to violence in their literature.

adventure 2 the 10th power
The book was semi ok. I didn't like the pacing of it too much and the change in the title threw me for a bit. Usually Gotrek and Felix books are always titled "Slayer of ....." The story was ok but barely that and I didn't get much of a true sense of where in time this took place from the book. I had to do some research to find out online.
I've been hooked on Gotrek and Felix for several years now, reading everything written to date.If you've read any of their other stories you know what to expect in this one.as usual it has all the sword, sorcery and otherworldly creatures that Gotrek and Felix can handle-barely!
no issues
Interesting characters including the evil ones.
I really, really wanted to like the latest Gotrek and Felix novel, I really did. I've been a fan of the series for twenty years now and I have every novel in the series and several of the old, well out of print Boxtree books. Josh Reynold's previous short stories weren't bad either (although clearly Black Library didn't give him the complete collection to go through before he took on the characters).

Overall, this book isn't the worst of the series (that probably goes the Giant Slayer or Orc Slayer), but it's not that good either. The first problem I had is that the story is way to "macro" by focusing more on the Chaos and Dwarf armies than on the characters. In this respect it reminds me more of the Warhammer 40,000 Battles series of novels than the Gotrek and Felix series.

The second problem I have with it is that it is way over the top with product placement. I know that the purpose of each and every one of these novels is to sell models, but this one is worse than usual. It almost appeared that they sat Mr. Reynolds down with a copy of the Warrior of Chaos army book, circled what was new, and told him to include it. For example, the Chaos General has a bound Slaughterbrute right down to the swords embedded in the monster's spine (just like the model). I don't mind some product placement, but they were a little too "in your face" with it this time.

The final problem I had with it is that Mr. Reynolds repeats phraseology. Clearly, he's got a few favorite descriptors that he uses over an over. The two most used (although there were more) is every body is "caught unawares" and every armor reference is the a "cuirass," to the point where it seems that no other armor is worn. In one chapter, the "caught unawares" has been used four times within the first ten pages of the chapter! Get a thesaurus please! This repetition just smacks of laziness.

So those were the problems I had with this book. If you are a big fan of the series, go ahead and get it just to be complete, but if you're not familiar, go back and start at the beginning.
I am a huge fan of Gotrek and Felix. Last year when the anthology came out, I feared that Nathan Long might not be continuing if Black Library was letting other authors pen stories. Now that this book was released by one of the authors from that anthology...well I decided to try it.
First off, this does not continue the story from Zombieslayer. In fact, it takes place somewhere back in the first books by William King. I had a hard time placing it, then just gave up and I am now considering it as a side story.
Edit the first I just read up on Josh Reynolds blog, this is supposed to take place just after Trollslayer, the first book. And this, and the other stories that are coming out are supposed to be non continuity. And that the main story is on hiatus. So, in that light, I am less confused and can see this book in a better frame of mind.
Edit the second So after going back and rereading Trollslayer, this follows Gotrek and Felix's characters pretty good for that period of their travels. But the author still missed both of their signature weapons characteristic runes glowing in the presence of warp magics and daemons.
Overall, this is a well written story and good for those who may not have read much of Gotrek and Felix before. For those who have followed the saga, go back to the first book to reacquaint yourself to a younger Felix and harsher Gotrek. It makes for a much better read.
